Damask - A tone on tone, repeated, jacquard-patterned fabric made from natural, synthetic, or blended fibers. Damask is used for napkins, tablecloths, draperies, and upholstery. An example of damask fabric is Milliken's Rose Pattern Table Linen.
Degradation - The loss of desirable physical properties by a textile material as a result of some process or physical/chemical experience.
Delustering - Dulling of a textile's original luster as a result of some process or physical/chemical experience.
Denier - Denier is a direct numbering system where the lower numbers represent finer sizes and higher numbers represent coarser sizes. In the Unites States, the denier system is used for numbering filament yarns, manufactured fiber staple, and tow. In most countries outside the United States, the denier system has been replaced by the TEX system.
Detergent - A synthetic cleaning agent containing surfactants that do not precipitate in hard water and have the ability to emulsify oil and suspend dirt.
Differential Shrinkage - In the context of towels, differential shrinkage occurs after laundering when the body and the border of the towel shrink at different rates causing a bowing effect.
Dimensional Stability - The ability of textile material to maintain or return to its original shape.
Dinner Napkin - Dinner napkins are generally considered to be size 20"x20" (cut size) or larger. When purchasing wholesale table linen, please note the larger the napkin, the more formal it is considered to be.
Discount Table Linen - Wholesale table linen offered at very cheap prices for budget conscious consumers. Discount table linen is typically sold in bulk in standard sizes and colors.
Disperse Dyes - A class of slightly water-soluble dyes used mostly on manufactured fibers.
Dobby Border - A raised, decorative, woven, interior border a few inches from the edge of some towel products. Different towel brands have different dobby designs. (Also see Cam Border.)
Double Density - Another name for a two-ply yarn.
Drape - A term used to describe the way fabric hangs when suspended from a solid structure such as a table.
Drying Time - The amount of time required to fully expel moister from a wholesale linen product. Drying time usually varies between 10 and 20 minutes depending on extraction, load size, and temperature.
Duck - A compact, firm, heavy, plain weave fabric with a weight of 6 - 50 ounces per square yard. Plied yarn duck has plied yarns in both warp and filling. Flat duck has a warp of two singles yarns woven as one and a filling of either singles or plied yarn.
Durability - A relative term for the resistance of a textile to loss of physical properties or appearance as a result of wear or other experiences.
Dyeability - A term used to describe the ability of a textile fiber to accept dyes.
Dye Migration - The undesirable movement of dye from one area of a textile to another.
