Lattice Placemats by Milliken - A style of commercial placemat fabric manufactured by Milliken & Company. The style is a two-ply fabric with a lattice pattern. Lattice is made of 100% polyester for maximum longevity. As a result of its stylish look and longevity, Lattice is often the commercial placemat fabric of choice for discriminating dining facilities. Lattice replaced Milliken & Company's popular, plain weave placemat fabric called Homespun.

Linen - Cellulose fibers derived from the stem of the FLAX plant or a fabric made from these fibers. Linen is the oldest fabric known to man, dating to at least 4000 B.C., when it was produced in Egypt. Linen fibers are stronger and more lustrous than cotton; they yield cool, absorbent fabrics that wrinkle easily.

Linen Rental A term used to describe the for-profit companies who rent wholesale table linen and other linen products to consumers for a fee. Generally speaking, the linen is to be returned soiled after use within a pre-determined period of time. The linen rental company will then clean the linen and re-rent it to the next user. Linen rental companies typically purchase their linen from wholesale linen distributors and/or manufacturers.

Lining Fabric - Fabric used to cover inner surfaces of a product or object. Frequently, lining fabric is of a different material than the outer surface. Lining fabric generally has a smooth, lustrous appearance such as silk or satin, but velvet and felt are also common. Both manufactured fibers and natural fibers are used.

Linting - Particles and short fibers expelled from a wholesale linen product during the stresses of everyday use.

Lock-stitch - A stitching method that creates a stitch with a top thread and a bobbin that locks the stitches into place and prevents a broken thread from unraveling. Used mostly on commercial linen products that must endure frequent laundering.

Long Staple - A long fiber. For cotton, long staple indicates a fiber length of not less than 1 1/8 inches. For wool, the term indicates fiber 3 to 4 inches long that is suitable for combing.

Loom - A machine for weaving fabric by interlacing a series of vertical, parallel threads (the warp) with a series of horizontal, parallel threads (the filling).

Looper - Component of a sewing machine that picks up the yarn from the needle at the bottom of the downstroke and holds it while the needle retracts from the backing.

Lustering - The finishing of yarn or fabric by means of heat, pressure, steam, friction calendering, etc., to produce luster.
